Kitchen Remodel Phase 2: New Walls and New Floors

Shortly after we got settled into our makeshift kitchen, we had to cover everything in plastic as the new ductwork and plumbing started to encroach upon our diminished living space.  This demo part was horrible!  There was dust everywhere.  There were workers everywhere.  There was so much noise!  It was not fun at all...

One of the coolest things about the project was the steel beams that were raised and imbedded into the floor joists above.  The beams ran along the framing between the family room and kitchen in an overhang that we wanted to eliminate to create a more open, cohesive look.  It took a machine and 8 men to move and lift the beam into place...

You can see how the wall is low at the entryway between the two rooms in this before pic...

And now, it is flush with the railing of the top floor.  They had to build false walls to support the structure during this process.  It was very cool...

This was done on the kitchen/dining room side as well...

Then, the false walls come down and it is starting to look more like our floor plan...

We knocked out the windows around where the kitchen table used to live.  This will become our sink area with cabinetry all around, so the windows needed to change shape and size...

The drywall process was especially messy, but now it is starting to look like progress!

The floors!  Oh, how I love our new wood floors!  We had them site finished, so it was also a very messy, smelly project, but definitely worth it!

The staining process was incredible!

Aren't they beautiful?!!

To compare to the ugly old tile, here is a "before" pic of the front entryway...

And after (from a different angle)...

A "before" pic of the hallway into the mudroom...

And "after"!!

There was a ginormous dumpster in our driveway for weeks...

Nothing like doing dishes in the bathroom!!!
